Trying to Find Ways to Make BLOG VILLAGE More Useful to YOU

I'm playing around with some ideas about making the front page of the TopList more like a PORTAL page. So, for the meantime, I've added a NEWS FEED and a WEATHER link. My thinking was that it might help you come up with something to blog about, or just be for your own personal reading pleasure. I'm trying to figure out some way to let each of you have an area where you could add favorite links, too. If someone knows how I could do that with script for HTML or CSS, please let me know.

Also, if you think this might be useful, or a waste of space and time, I'd appreciate your feedback. As I said, I'm just playing, and perfectly willing to delete it all and go back to the way it was. Or, continue to look for new Java scripts and such that will work.

For the time being, I've moved these changes to the Gateway page. That's what you see when you vote for a blog from the link on the blog. If you all like the portal idea, it would be simple enough to bookmark your link page, instead of the main TopList page. Or, I can move it back to the top or bottom of the main page. I'm completely open to suggestions on this one, as I'm just experimenting.

So, let me have it - positive or negative opinions welcomed!!

PS. You may have noticed that some of the Ratings have gone up on the Village. I am in the process of manually deleting ratings given by a certain person, whose IP has now been blocked. If you have one of these 0 or 1 ratings, without a comment to back it up, please let me know, and I will delete it for you.

We could have either a simple forum linked or a chat board on this website so people can recommend or promote blogs on BlogVillage?

I'll look into that, Jackie. Thanks for the suggestion. Since I have my own domain, this should be doable, if it doesn't involve me spending too much more time on it.

Where you added that a new post had been added the BV Community News with the date is very helpful!!

There are probably a lot of little things like that which I could do, that would be helpful, Janey Loree. If you think of anything, let me know, and I'll see if I can make it work.

Actually, I voted "I Don't Know," but then I started using the portal a little bit. Found out the weather in Homey town is darn HOT! Phew! I'll see what else I can click on. Thanks for always trying to make B. Village a nice place to belong.

BTW, how 'bout we publish "The Blog Village Cookbook."???. Yay! Where's my book reviews? LOL. I'm standing by. Have a great week DB.

I have a lot of ideas about scripts that might be helpful, but it's harder to find ones that will work on a web page, rather than a blog. For the time being there are things I can't do because gotop100 isn't currently set up for it. But the owner is willing to work on at least some of what I would like to do. I don't know when he can get to it, though

Maybe the easiest way to do a Cookbook would be to use a Carnival format. If each entry had appropriate tags, it would be searchable. What do you think??

I think adding "home page" attributes can be a good idea.

Having the list of news stories and weather, though, is not creating that feel. To me it's a bit of an intrusion. If you want to look at those features there are tons of places to find them...and the link to "enter" is obscured.

I'm not a programmer, but I'd suggest looking at what features there are that makes Blog Village a community and find ways to spotlight those in the opening page.

A list of all the featured villager profiles for an example, without having to surf to find them.

A list of links to carnivals that have been hosted by Villagers would be another example.

Good suggestions, Anthony. I've already taken your advice! I'll continue to play with it as I have time.

I've never tried to do anything with a chat room before, Jackie, but I did add one to the Gateway page. Enjoy!
