How Do YOU Respond to Comments??

You DO respond, don't you?? So many bloggers don't seem to, and it looks to me like they're missing half the fun, and value, of blogging.

I've noticed several different ways that bloggers use to positively respond to people who comment on their blogs.
Some bloggers email the person, thanking them for commenting and continue the discussion started on the blog.

Some bloggers respond to each comment with a comment on the blog, possibly continuing the discussion there.

Some bloggers use one comment to respond to several comments on the blog, sometimes continuing the discussion there, but not as often as the individual response does.

Some bloggers follow the commenter back to their own blog and thank them for the visit from there, maybe encouraging them to come again soon, and often commenting on their blog posts, too.
I'd be interested in knowing how YOU handle comments. Maybe you do something I haven't thought of. If so, please share with us! Which way do you think works best for you? Which way are you least likely to try?

I normally follow up on the comment or track them back if they're new.

I like to track back to bloggers I don't recognize, too, Leon. I usually comment on their blog, unless it's a blog I'm not comfortable with, and I thank them for the visit. Sometimes I take advantage of the comment to put a link to my blog, too. Then I respond to the original comment on my own blog.

Mostly I don't comment. What I do is visit the people who visit me. If I do respond, I will do it by email if I possibly can. Remembering to go back to blogs where you have commented to see if there's a reply isn't always easy.

I mean that I don't usually comment on comments.

So you respond via email, if you do respond, anvilcloud? I know you visit people who visit you, because ... here you are! I like to go back to Villager's blogs to see if they commented on my comment, but I don't track down other comments I make.

I sometimes leave comments on their blogs but not always - I do usually visit their blog though. I don't always have time to comment on everyone and sometimes I don't like their blog, it's a difficult one - i know really I should be commenting on them all...ahhh well, sorry everyone!

I know what you mean about not commenting on blogs that you don't like. Sometimes I follow a blogger back to their blog and frankly just don't care to be associated with their personal take on blogging. Everybody to their own tastes. In that case, I just comment on my own blog, thanking them for the visit, and let it go at that.

Don't feel bad, pupski, nobody has the time, energy, or interest in responding to every single comment, but it's a good idea to try, as it increases your own reader base and makes blogging more fun, IMVHO.

I usually respond to my comments if a responce is called for.

I have come across blogs who do a post as a thanks to all their comments. Personally I don't get that many comments. (poor little me)

I just left you a comment on one of your blogs, Sparkling :) I've seen blogs that did the group thank you, too. Seemed a little pointless to me, though. I don't think that method would increase reader loyalty, frankly.

You say you don't get many comments ... do you leave many comments??

I hardly ever respond to peoples comments with a comment in my own blog, however, I normally go onto their blog and if i can comment on that i will and sometimes thank them or respond to their comment in their own blog.

The main thing, Ashley, is that you do acknowledge their comment, and you show an interest in them. That encourages people to visit your blog again, IMVHO.
